(reported at the DTC meeting 3/26/09)

Legislative Reports:

Representative Pat Widlitz reported work in the Capitol has been frantic of late. She stated their goal is to impact the fewest people; however, some tax increases and borrowing will be needed to pass the budget. AIG bonuses were discussed today. The AIG bonuses legal issues are under review and hope to be resolved soon. Rep. Widlitz noted that most of the bonuses have been given back.

Rep. Widlitz has introduced a bill regarding Ultrasound Procedures. There are some non-medical businesses opening up in the State that market directly to pregnant mothers to monitor the growth of their babies through ultrasound. A few of the businesses have names such as, "What’s Kicking?" and "Womb with a View". There has been testimony from Doctors from Yale and Radiology Associates recommending against these entertainment ultrasounds. The bill has been passed on for vote.

Selectmen's Report:

Veronica Wallace reported the budget has been passed to the Board of Finance; the public hearing is April 7th and the Referendum is April 21st. Selectperson Wallace also noted a) the Goss property is scheduled for closing in July; b) Planning and Zoning will review the Town’s Comprehensive Plan; and c) Selectman Sal Catardi, a board member of the Tweed New Haven Airport Authority, announced at the last Board of Selectman Meeting the good news that an agreement has been reached between New Haven and East Haven for runway safety improvements paving the way to air carrier expansion.

State Comptroller's Update:

Nancy Wyman spoke to the DTC regarding the current budget crisis, and asked us to give our Representatives support during these difficult times. She discussed many of the critical issues facing the State Legislature several of which will have some affect on local communities. She stated that the Governor indicated there will be flat-funding for education to local communities, however while true in the aggregate, there may be differences among individual communities. She is concerned about how the Governor will use the funds from the Federal Stimulus package and the need, presumably to get waivers from the Federal Government to use the funds in a way different from its original intent.

When asked if she was considering running for Governor, she responded that right now her concern and focus are on doing her job as State Comptroller.
