(reported at the DTC meeting 9/25/08)

First Selectman Carl Balestracci:
  1. Possible topics for inclusion in a 2009 referendum—actual date uncertain but likely before 6/30/09:

    • 2010 Town budget
    • Bond issue for new schools

  2. New schools proposal: a workshop for members of the BOS, BOF and BOE on the BOE’s proposal for rebuilding two new schools - (Adams Middle School and Guilford High School at a combined cost estimate of $110 million) will be held on Thursday October 2 at 7:30 pm in the Adams School Music Room. Members of the public are welcome to attend. Given that there have already been 16 public workshops on this issue, there will be no public comments taken at this workshop whose purpose is to allow full discussion between the three Town Boards before any referral to a public referendum will occur.

  3. Current Open Space purchase is moving forward

Board of Education Chairman Bill Bloss:

In spite of the enormous amounts of time taken with proposed school rebuilding plans in the past year, the good news is that the results of recent state test scores are outstanding. They show considerable improvement over earlier testing.

Guilford (one of 19 schools in the second tier) scores among this group on four main subjects:

• Math - Guilford ranked third
• Science - Guilford ranked fifth
• Reading - Guilford ranked second
• Writing - Guilford ranked seventh

Overall aggregate scores within the second tier school group has Guilford ranked second! Credit must go to the new School Superintendant (add name here) and the teachers who are doing an outstanding job. BOE member Lou Federicci added that if Guilford is to retain its present excellent cadre of teachers, and continue its improvement in scholastic achievement, then the poor physical teaching conditions must be remedied or teachers will choose to work in another town.
